St. George’s University (SGU) School of Graduate Studies offers a dual degree program combining a Doctor of Medicine degree and a Master of Science degree in biomedical research (MScBR). The primary goal of the MS/MScBR program is to provide students with skills in biomedical research to enhance their clinical skills. By adding the MScBR degree to their MD degree, students will be better prepared to practice evidence-based medicine, which will enable them to provide better clinical care. Course work includes research design, biostatistics, research ethics, and scientific authorship. The areas of research concentration students can address span the full spectrum of clinical investigations in medicine.
The strength of the MD/MScBR program is the combination of study in medicine and study in biomedical research. In the program, medical students learn about research by conducting hands-on research in a clinical setting during their medical training. The exposure to actual on-going research during the program augments the students’ understanding of the role of research in medicine. In the MD/MScBR Program, students will develop skills that will increase their probability of obtaining a residency and provide a broader pathway for career opportunities by opening doors that might not otherwise be open. Throughout the program students will become more insightful clinicians who can provide better patient care and stay current in their profession by conducting research and publishing research in their chosen specialties.
The MD/MScBR Program offers students unique opportunities to work in a major teaching hospital in a specialty relevant to the student’s professional goals, be actively guided by a Supervisory Committee through weekly interaction with subject matter experts, interact one-on-one with a research mentor who is a practicing clinician actively conducting research, participate in an on-going research program on a current topic in biomedical research, be part of a team of researchers and develop collaborative team-working skills, and to develop networking connections with professional colleagues that otherwise might not be possible.
The MD/PhD program provides enhanced research exposure in the Biomedical Sciences for SGU medical graduates who have successfully completed their MD degree, but who wish to pursue a PhD. This degree is offered online so that students worldwide can participate. Students will conduct research for the MD/PhD at a research laboratory or teaching hospital in their home country. Mentorship will be through a local mentor and supervisors from SGU who will be online.
