A failing grade (F) is defined as a final course grade below the minimum passing grade established for each term. If this is the student’s first attempt at a course, there are two possible consequences of a failing grade:
- Continuation on Monitored Academic Status (MAS) with specified conditions
- Recommendation for dismissal
1. Continuation on Monitored Academic Status (MAS)
Students will be allowed to continue in the MD program despite failing to meet satisfactory academic performance if all of the following conditions are met:
- No previous F grade in any course in the program.
- No more than one of the following:
- Credit Remediation option (CR); or
- Leave of Absence (LOA).
The student will be given an opportunity to repeat the failed course in the ITI delivery format and will be placed on MAS.
The student will be permitted to register for the course a second time and to earn a second grade for the course. The grade and credits earned on both the first and the second attempt at a course will be calculated into the cumulative Weighted Mean Percentage Grade (WMPG). The grade earned on the second attempt does not replace the grade earned on the first attempt.
2. Recommendation for Dismissal
Students will be recommended for dismissal if they fail a course worth more than 4 credits and any one of the following conditions applies:
1. The student has two timeline delays, in any combination, consisting of:
- Prior Credit Remediation option (CR)
- Prior Leave of Absence (LOA)
2. The student has either of the following:
- Previous CR in the failed course
- Previous F grade in any course
Students will also be recommended for dismissal if they have exceeded or will exceed the 6-year maximum allowable timeline for completing the MD Program.
Students who are recommended for dismissal may appeal to the Committee for Academic Progress and Professional Standards (CAPPS). This is the only opportunity to appeal the recommendation for dismissal. Therefore, any student recommended for dismissal is required to meet with the Office of Student Affairs for guidance on the appeal process.
