As per current School of Medicine policy, if a student misses an examination, regardless of reason, then they are temporarily given a zero score for the missed examination and an Incomplete (I) grade for the course. The student must take the Completion Examination as scheduled to replace the Incomplete (I) with a valid examination score.
Process of Resolution of Missed Examinations
Approved Absence/Medical Excuse: Students who miss an examination with an approved excuse are required to complete the scheduled Completion Examination in accordance with the policy above.
Unapproved Absence: Any student who is not approved to miss an examination should notify their course director of their absence and contact the Office of Student Affairs (studentaffairs@sgu.edu) on or before the day of the scheduled examination. The Office of Student Affairs will provide the student with the official Explanation for Missed Exam form. The Request Form requires a detailed written explanation for missing the examination, which will be evaluated by the Faculty Panel on Academic Professionalism (FPAP). FPAP will then determine whether any further information is needed, whether a panel hearing is required, and the amount of academic penalty to the student's course grade for the absence.
If the student does not contact the Office of Student Affairs regarding the missed examination or fails to attend a scheduled FPAP hearing, then the zero-score for the examination will stand.
