The Summative Final Clerkship Evaluation

Grading Policy for the Clerkships

The clerkship director completes an electronic Final Evaluation Form through the Clinical Evaluation System for each student in a core clerkship. The form, shown in Appendix J, includes narrative comments, subcomponent grades, component grades, and a final summative grade. Narrative comments summarize the student’s clinical performance and professional behavior, attendance, rapport with patients and staff, and development of required clerkship competencies. The narrative section allow faculty to provide personalized evaluative information beyond the assigned grades and may be quoted in the MSPE.

A separate section allows faculty to provide constructive comments for ongoing development that are not used in the MSPE. Students should review all comments as soon as possible after completing the Student Feedback Questionnaire at the end of the rotation. Narrative feedback from physicians support self-reflection, self-directed learning, and continued professional growth.
