This section describes the requirements that form the foundation of the third and fourth years (Terms 6–10). These include the five core rotations, a Family Medicine rotation, a sub-internship in a core specialty, and a Medicine rotation.
During the clinical years, students continue to acquire medical knowledge while developing the clinical skills and professional behavior required to apply that knowledge to patient care. Students should give highest priority to the end-of-clerkship NBME Clinical Subject Examinations and, for those interested in US residency, USMLE Step 2. Integrating medical knowledge, clinical skills, and professional behavior prepares students for postgraduate training, independent practice, and lifelong learning.
SGU is committed to a competency-based curriculum. The School organizes its outcome objectives into three domains—Medical Knowledge, Clinical Skills, and Professional Behavior, which provide the framework for the clinical curriculum and student assessment. These outcome objectives are aligned with nationally recognized frameworks, including the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Core Competencies and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for Entering Residency.
