Fourth-Year Students and Graduates without a Residency
The following options and pathways may help eligible students and graduates strengthen their applications for a future Match. The Office of Career Guidance (OCG) provides webinars on these options and pathways and distributes application materials. Questions should be directed to careerguidance@sgu.edu.
Eligibility and Considerations
- Participants must not have secured any postgraduate medical training, including internship training outside the US.
- Participants must have met all graduation requirements, including completion of the 80-week clinical curriculum and passing all required NBME Clinical Subject Examinations.
- Students who previously participated in a program requiring delayed graduation, such as the Extended Clinical Program or the MSc in Biomedical Research, may not delay graduation a second time.
- Additional requirements may apply based on program availability and start dates.
- Participants must maintain medical insurance coverage.
Extended Clinical Program
The Extended Clinical Program (ECP) allows eligible students to complete up to 8 weeks of audition electives at SGU-affiliated hospitals in the US without additional tuition while maintaining medical student status. US citizens and permanent residents may complete rotations at non-affiliated hospitals but are responsible for any associated fees.
Students must graduate by the next main diploma-granting date. For example, a student who was scheduled to graduate in June and participates in the ECP must graduate by the following January. The only University charge is the medical student malpractice insurance premium. Participation in the ECP may be limited to certain months and affiliated hospitals.
Master of Public Health
The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a one-year online program and is not a dual-degree program. Tuition is waived for eligible participants.
Master of Business Administration
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Multi-Sector Health Management is a one-year online program with cohort-based classes and two in-person weeks in Grenada, one at the beginning and one near the end of the program. Although tuition is waived, eligible participants are responsible for the cost of books, applicable fees, and travel to Grenada.
Master of Science in Biomedical Research
The Master of Science in Biomedical Research (MSc BR) is a 34-week dual-degree MD/MSc program in which students conduct research in a clinical setting while retaining medical student status. Students must have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2. Although tuition is waived, eligible participants are responsible for maintaining malpractice insurance. This program begins in mid-May.
Master of Science in Bioethics
The Master of Science in Bioethics (MSc Bioethics) is a 34-week dual-degree MD/MSc program in which students complete coursework in the responsible conduct of research and develop a bioethics research project for publication. Students must have passed both USMLE Step 1 and Step 2. Tuition is waived for eligible participants. The program begins in early August.
SGU Research Fellowship Program
The SGU Research Fellowship Program is a one-year research opportunity in Grenada for graduates to conduct research with the Medical Student Research Institute (MSRI) and teach components of the Basic Sciences curriculum. The University provides a monthly stipend.
Research Programs Through SGU Affiliates
SGU may periodically become aware of research opportunities available through affiliated hospitals. Graduates who have received the MD degree and are interested in research may request information about available opportunities.
Self-Directed Strategies
Students and graduates are encouraged to use their professional and personal networks to strengthen their career opportunities. Those who pursue pathways outside SGU should inform OCG so that the University can continue to provide support and career guidance.
