Appendix A: Guidelines for the Preparation of a Thesis Proposal

Thesis Layout

A thesis proposal must follow the guidelines for the presentation of the final thesis and should include the title page, Supervisory Committee signature page, table of contents, acknowledgments, use of Generative AI for the production of the thesis, acronyms and abbreviations used, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, which should include a detailed timeline, references, and any appropriate appendices. The thesis proposal should be prepared and presented as in the guidelines for the preparation of the candidate’s thesis, detailed in 3.0 below. The thesis proposal should be sufficiently detailed and complete to provide most of the information necessary for the introduction and materials and methods section of the final thesis. The final thesis, therefore, should only require the addition to the thesis proposal of the sections on results, discussion, conclusion, and recommendations.

The candidate is encouraged to review bound copies of theses, which are available at the library or online (http://eos.sgu.edu/EOSWebOPAC/opac/Index.aspx).

Timeline for Completion of a Graduate Degree

A timeline for completion of the thesis should be included in the materials and methods of the thesis proposal. This timeline is an important component of the thesis proposal as it provides the student and all members of the supervisory committee with an overview of the activities and progress a student should be making during their degree program. Any changes to the timeline should be agreed upon by the student and the Supervisory Committee.  This timeline should be included in the final thesis as an appendix.  An example of a timeline is provided below.
