Leave of Absence (LOA)

Leave of Absence (LOA) Application

Students in the School of Arts and Sciences may apply for a Leave of Absence (LOA) prior to the start of the semester or after the semester has started until 5:00 p.m. on Friday of Week 15 of the semester. All LOA requests are reviewed by the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS). If the LOA is requested for medical reasons, documentation will be required, and the DOS may consult with the Director of the University Health Services. Once approved, the LOA will be granted for one semester. Students are permitted up to four (4) LOAs throughout the duration of their studies.

If a student submits an LOA request on the last day of the semester (week of scheduled final exams), the LOA will not be approved.

Any student who misses their final examination(s) and/or any scheduled completion exam and was not approved for an LOA or a medical excuse, will receive a grade of ‘0’ on the missed examination(s).

Returning from LOA

Students returning from LOA must meet with a Dean in the Office of the Dean of Students one month prior to the end of the leave expiration date, email, dos@sgu.edu.

Students on the Medical Leave of Absence will be required to submit a health clearance to University Health Services, clinic mail-in clinic@sgu.edu  to registration check-in.

In some cases, the Director of Health services may require an Independent Medical Evaluation (IME) prior to returning for the subsequent semester.
