The Trust & the Hospital
Poole General Hospital

Poole Hospital is an acute general hospital based on the south coast of England. The trust employs around 3,600 staff. The hospital has a 24-hour major accident and emergency department and is the designated trauma unit for East Dorset, serving a population of around 500,000 people. In addition, the hospital’s flagship Dorset Cancer Centre provides medical and clinical oncology services for the whole of Dorset, serving a total population of over 750,000. Both St Mary’s Maternity Hospital and Forest Holme, the palliative care unit, are located a short walk from the main hospital.

Poole Hospital provides acute services for the local population of Poole, Purbeck and East Dorset, and is the lead provider for the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch conurbation for trauma, maternity, paediatrics and ENT services.

With a history of innovation, the Trust provides pioneering services across a range of clinical specialties. The hospital is a centre of excellence and training in keyhole surgery; our elderly care unit has received national acclaim for its pioneering model of multidisciplinary care; and the nurse-led medical investigations unit has been highlighted as a benchmark in nursing innovation.
