Students in the MD program are expected to be adaptive, self-directed learners who can integrate what they know and apply their knowledge clinically. This cognitive process may occur independently during and after an academic lecture or through interactions with others.
Teaching and learning in the MD program include required activities such as academic lectures, formative and summative assessments, small group discussions, laboratory sessions, and clinical experiences. Optional activities include open laboratory hours, faculty office hours, peer-facilitated reviews, and academic support seminars. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities available for learning and academic development.
For students who require additional support to meet performance standards, SGUSOM offers two alternative academic pathways: Interactive Team Instruction (ITI) and Credit Remediation (CR).
During post-examination academic advising meetings, students who are unlikely to meet performance standards may be offered the option of joining the ITI delivery format of the MD program or pursuing the CR option. The ITI provides additional academic support to help students meet performance standards. Students who, despite the available support, remain unlikely to meet those standards may need to consider the CR option.
