Office of Career Guidance
The Office of Career Guidance (OCG) supports medical students throughout both the Basic Sciences and Clinical Studies phases of the MD program as they prepare for residency training and postgraduate career pathways. OCG provides structured, region-specific guidance for residency applications in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with additional support for international medical graduates.
Career Guidance During the Basic Sciences Phase
During the Basic Sciences phase, the OCG focuses on early career awareness and preparation to ensure students enter the clinical years with a clear understanding of residency expectations and career planning requirements.
Support during the Basic Sciences phase includes:
- Individualized career guidance appointments with trained career advisors
- Mandatory lectures addressing the residency match process, specialty selection, and current trends
- Workshops, seminars, and career-focused programming, offered independently and in collaboration with student interest groups
- Guidance on early specialty exploration and long-term career planning
- Preparation for the transition from the Basic Sciences phase to the Clinical Studies phase of training
Students interested in pursuing medical training or practice in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or other regions receive early guidance and referrals to appropriate resources.
Career Guidance During the Clinical Studies Phase
During the Clinical Studies phase, the OCG provides comprehensive residency application support, including:
- Residency application platforms (ERAS/R-CAS, CaRMS, and Oriel)
- Eligibility requirements, licensure examinations, and timelines
- Preparation of application materials (CVs, personal statements, and letters of recommendation)
- Interview preparation and Match strategy
- Visa, licensing, and IMG-specific advising
- Post-residency fellowship and career planning
Support in the Clinical Studies phase is delivered through individualized advising, workshops, digital resources, and structured application timelines.
Access to OCG Services
OCG services are available through:
- Scheduled advising appointments
- Workshops, seminars, and webinars (live and recorded)
- Digital guides, checklists, and application resources
- Collaboration with other SGU offices, including Clinical Academic Advising and Immigration Support Services
OCG support remains available throughout medical school and after graduation as needed.
