This portion of the clinical curriculum has five primary goals:
- To broaden and deepen clinical education beyond the core rotations
- To continue clinical training at a higher level with more responsibility
- To develop clinical competence consistent with the training standards of an approved residency program in preparation for postgraduate training
- To complete sub-internships and electives that best meet each student's academic needs and career goals
- To address any deficiencies or unsatisfactory performance identified by the APRC in order to meet graduation requirements
Sub-internships and electives at clinical centers or other affiliated hospitals with related postgraduate programs may be arranged through the Office of Clinical Education Operations or by the DME at the assigned hospital.
Many electives are offered by clinical centers and affiliated hospitals and are listed on the SGU Clinical Portal. As a general rule, all elective rotations should be at least four weeks in duration. Elective rotations may be completed only on services that have a related postgraduate training program.
Students may complete up to 12 weeks of elective rotations at unaffiliated hospitals. To complete an elective at an unaffiliated hospital, students must submit a Single Elective Affiliation Agreement. This form is included in Appendix D and is available on the SGU Clinical Portal. The Office of Clinical Education Operations reviews all requests. Requests must be submitted at least 90 days before the start date of the anticipated elective, and approval must be obtained before the rotation begins. Credit will not be awarded for electives completed without prior approval.
Licensure requirements vary by country, state, and province. Credit earned through electives completed at unaffiliated hospitals may not be accepted by some licensing authorities. Students are responsible for verifying licensure requirements with the licensing authority in the jurisdiction where they intend to practice.
SGU’s medical malpractice insurance policy covers students participating in approved clinical training at healthcare facilities throughout the US, UK, Canada, and the Caribbean.
