The SOM established the Medical Student Research Institute (MSRI) as part of its mission to promote research as an integral component of the MD Program. The MSRI provides opportunities for academically strong students to engage in basic, clinical, translational, or social science research under faculty mentorship. Research may allow students to explore specialties of interest, clarify career goals, and develop an academic record that may support residency applications.
The MSRI offers separate research tracks for students in the Basic Sciences and Clinical Studies phases.
Basic Sciences Student Research
The Basic Sciences Student Research track is available beginning in Term 2 to students who have achieved a minimum Weighted Mean Percentage Grade (WMPG) of 90%. Accepted students may participate in research throughout the Basic Sciences phase and may qualify for a Distinction in Research or Scholarly Activity upon graduation.
Clinical Student Research
The Clinical Student Research track is available to students who have completed Term 5 and rank within the top 5% of their cohort upon entry into Clinical Studies.
Research opportunities with clinical faculty at affiliated hospitals are generally coordinated through the Clinical MSRI directors. Students may select from available research projects and faculty mentors as they begin their mentored clinical research experience. Accepted students may participate in research during the Clinical Studies phase and may qualify for a Distinction in Research or Scholarly Activity upon graduation.
Participation in either MSRI track requires a strong academic record. The eligibility criteria reflect the expectation that students' primary responsibility is to master the material in their Basic Sciences courses and clinical rotations and maintain academic excellence.
Students may also conduct research independently; however, research activities must not interfere with academic performance or clinical responsibilities.
