The SOM requires that students be instructed and supervised by qualified and competent faculty in adequate number. This requirement is included in affiliated agreements with hospitals that provide clinical training for SGUSOM students.
All clinical experiences must be supervised by appropriate clinical faculty. A physician, nurse, or other health care provider must be present in the room as a chaperone when students examine patients of any gender, particularly during examinations of the breasts, genitalia, or rectum. Student orders entered into the medical record must be authorized and countersigned by a physician. Students may perform minor procedures after receiving adequate instruction and only as permitted by hospital policy and applicable regulations.
Students participating in clinical training in hospitals are covered by liability insurance carried by SGU.
Students must become familiar with the medical record, whether electronic or paper, and know how to locate its individual components. As stipulated by the SGU clerkship curriculum and hospital policy, students are responsible for patient workups and might also write daily progress notes.
