Students may take a leave of absence (LOA) during the Clinical Studies phase. Students who take excessive LOAs for health or other reasons should limit bridge time and remain on track to complete the MD program within the 6-year timeline. An absence of more than one year is incompatible with satisfactory academic progress and may result in dismissal.
Students should be aware that extending their timeline, although academically advantageous in some circumstances, may reduce their competitiveness in obtaining a residency. In addition, interruptions in a student’s enrollment may affect loan repayment status and loan eligibility for students receiving US federal loans.
Immigration Issues
Students unable to meet the 6-year timeline because of unforeseen immigration issues will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students must contact the Office of Immigration Support Services (immigrationsupport@sgu.edu) with a copy to the Office of Student Affairs (studentaffairs@sgu.edu) to discuss their individual circumstances.
