Electives, sub-internships, and the required Family Medicine/General Practice rotations are graded on a Pass/Fail basis and require narrative comments, which may be included in the MSPE.
Assessment is based on the student’s performance in knowledge, clinical skills, and professional behavior. Credit is awarded only upon receipt of the student’s Clinical Elective Rotation Final Evaluation Form (Appendix F).
To earn a passing grade for an elective rotation, students must pass all 3 components assessed: Knowledge, Clinical Skills, and Professional Behavior. Failure of any of these components results in a failing grade for the rotation.
Students are permitted only one course failure during the clinical phase. If the elective rotation failure is the first failure during the clinical phase, the student may remediate the failing grade by taking and passing an additional elective in the same specialty. Electives with a failing grade do not count toward the required number of elective weeks for graduation.
Students who fail more than one rotation during the clinical phase are recommended for dismissal with an opportunity to appeal to the CAPPS.
