Academic Promotion Review Committee and Committee for Academic Progress and Professional Standards
Upon review of the Academic Promotion Review Committee (APRC), a student with failing grades or whose GPA falls below 3.0, or who may not be making adequate progress toward completing the program within the maximum timeline will be placed on Monitored Academic Status (MAS) for the duration of their time in the program. Deficiencies must be corrected in accordance with the stipulations and timeline determined by the APRC. Failure to do so may result in a recommendation for dismissal. Students who are recommended for dismissal may appeal to the Committee for Academic Progress and Professional Standards (CAPPS) through the established SGS appeals process. Students who are retained by the CAPPS, following a recommendation for dismissal, must indicate willingness to continue in the program and adhere to stipulations set out by the CAPPS. Failure to do so may result in a recommendation for dismissal.
The following criteria will be used by the APRC to determine end-of-term dismissal recommendations:
- Failure to complete the degree in the allotted time.
- Failure to earn satisfactory academic progress after three consecutive terms.
- Failure to earn a passing grade on the second attempt at taking a course.
- Failure to meet Committee for CAPPS stipulations following an appeal of a recommendation for dismissal.
- Failure to accept or comply with the terms of an APRC letter by the deadline specified.
- Failure to meet professional behavior standards, including failure to conform to requirements in the SGS student manual.
- Failure to complete the program within the mandated timeline as described in the program guidelines or extension granted by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies.
The CAPPS is obligated to consider not only the individual student’s appeal but also key considerations such as program requirements and standards, as well as the student’s performance history, timeline, and academic risk factors. SGS CAPPS is empowered to uphold or recommend overturning the prior decision made by the APRC.
