The Trust & the Hospital
Watford General Hospital
West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust provides acute healthcare services to a population of approximately half a million people living in West Hertfordshire and the surrounding area. The Trust also provides a range of more specialist services to a wider population. Watford General Hospital is one of three hospitals making up West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. It is a large acute hospital offering first class emergency care, as well as providing a full range of other services. All major specialties are covered including obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry, oral & maxillo-facial surgery and genito-urinary medicine. Watford General Hospital has the largest Acute Admissions Unit in the UK with 120 designated beds in a new unit, which includes diagnostics and pharmacy.
The Medical Education Centre (MEC) benefits from a designated clinical skills teaching room and regular teaching is scheduled for all students delivered by clinical skills facilitators supported by Junior Doctors. The MEC co-ordinates designated teaching for SGISM medical students who are also encouraged to attend the UK medical student and junior doctor teaching. Teaching will also take place in the clinical arena whenever possible. In addition to SGISM students the hospital accepts medical students from one of the main London teaching hospitals (UCL). Building good relationships with junior doctors is integral to learning and to support the medical students they are given membership of the onsite Junior Doctors Mess for the duration of their rotations at Watford General. There is an active Doctors Mess Committee, facilities in the Doctors Mess include Sky TV, pool and table football. Social events and lunches are arranged regularly.
