You will arrive at either Gatwick or Heathrow airports. Public transport is readily available from both, either by bus or train, into the centre of London where you can connect with trains to all parts of the country. Both airports are approximately 45 minutes from the centre of London by public transport. Students who are assigned to Russells Hall Hospital may wish to consider flying into Birmingham Airport.

Trains in the UK are one of the best means of transport, although the bus service is usually cheaper. Cars may be hired at the airports from rental firms and delivered to local depots when you arrive at your destination.

Once you are in the UK you may apply for a ‘Student Railcard’ which currently costs £30 (US$ 39). This entitles you to a 33% discount on some UK trains for a period of one year.

Forms are available from any train station or online at www.16-25railcard.co.uk. You will require two passport photographs and proof that you are a full-time student (available from the UK Office on request).

Alternatively, a ‘Network Card’ may be appropriate for your needs. There are many cards available to enable students to travel at reduced rates on public transport, i.e. Oyster cards in London.
