Life sometimes happens in unexpected ways but no matter the outcome it always seems to just fall into place. My UK experience has been so much more than I could have ever expected or imagined and has been integral in placing me one step closer to becoming a doctor. My dream has been to become a well-rounded medical professional with the capability to interact with and learn from people of various backgrounds, to be able to meet them where they are, and to positively impact their lives.
My experience has humbled me and without even realizing it has assisted in fulfilling my goal to travel the world. Born and raised in Jamaica, I completed my bachelor’s degree in the United States then journeyed to Grenada to complete my first two years of medical school, and now here I am in the UK inching closer and closer to the finish line. During my UK rotations, I have learned the true meaning of work-life balance, time management, and adaptability. I have learned to prioritize my well-being and mental state while maintaining a healthy equilibrium between time spent in the hospital and time spent self-studying at home. This experience has taught me the importance of teamwork and the integral role that each person plays. This experience has given me the confidence to seek assistance when needed, to admit when I have made a mistake, and to gain the necessary skills to minimize and eliminate similar mistakes in the future.
There may be differences in methods of treatment and techniques used in the US and I may be thousands of miles away from home, but this experience has made me a better person. The cooperation of the staff around me and the enthusiasm they have in seeing me succeed fuels my willingness to keep pushing no matter the challenges I face.
