Prior to medical school, I worked for a decade in healthcare. When I saw the opportunity to experience the NHS, I jumped at the chance. I wanted to see how another system worked and the chance to live in the UK. Unfortunately, the “seeing the UK/Europe” part of the plan got derailed by the pandemic.
I did my core rotations at NNUH and I have nothing but the best to say about the consultants, juniors, and staff. The educational environment is superb. Every team made sure that I was actively involved, had the chance to practice skills, and pushed me to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan. While it was an older and homogenous population, I had the chance to see a variety of different cases and a few rare diseases.
The highlights were my time with the pediatrics and emergency medicine teams. They were inclusive and educational forcing me out of my comfort zone to see patients as first clinician before joining to see the patient and develop a treatment plan. This greatly enhanced my learning and developed my clinical decision making.
Being able to see how the NHS operates has enhanced my understanding of how care is delivered and fostered and interest in health policy. Coupled with my past US healthcare experience, this has broadened my views of medicine and made me a better doctor.
Beyond the outstanding clinical training experience, the UK Clin Ed team are amazing. They have been helpful in getting me set up with my core and elective rotations and are very responsive to emails.
